Just kidding
Expect bundles of fun at Munster comedy
By Patrick Ferrell
If you've had kids, or are thinking about having them, chances are you and your spouse will find something to like about "Baby," the Theatre at the Center's latest production.
The Munster, Ind., theater's Broadway in Munster series officially kicked off last week with the story of three couples, all of whom are expecting a soft, bouncing baby.
The show intertwines the very-different-yet-very-much-the-same stories of the three couples: the first a couple of unmarried college students, another a pair of 30-somethings who had been facing infertility and, finally, new empty nesters who, perhaps, enjoyed their 20th wedding anniversary too much.
As the stories continue, the couples experience the same hopes, joys and difficulties of expecting a child.
Every couple in the audience is likely to identify with some aspect of at least one of the on-stage couples. More likely, they'll find themselves identifying with parts of all three.
The story is charming, but it lacks an antagonist, unless you count the discussion of life changes that come with welcoming a new bundle of joy.
The lack of an on-stage antithesis means the story drags, at times. The show is more of a 2½-hour character sketch than a play.
A majority of the scenes involve solos or duets, which you're sure to enjoy if you like minimalist theater.
There are only a few toe-tapping chorus scenes, but the ones that do appear are funny and entertaining. The most hysterical part of the show came midway during the first act, when the male characters sang about the "Fatherhood Blues," the giddy feeling of finding you're a dad-to-be.
The female characters open the second act with an amusing score of their own. Called "The Ladies Singin' Their Song," it is a look at how veteran mothers can't resist feeling a first-time-expectant mother's belly and dispensing advice to the naive mother-to-be.
The setting is colorful and cheery. Perhaps the best part of the show is the group of actors director David Perkovich and company assembled to play the proud parents.
The show stars Jessie Mueller and Jon Cunningham as Lizzie and Danny, the college students; McKinley Carter and James Rank as Pam and Nick, the 30-somethings, and Iris Lieberman and Bill Sharpen as Arlene and Alan, the empty nesters.
Each actor fits the respective part quite convincingly.
If you can find someone to watch the kids for the evening, it won't be a bad choice to catch "Baby."
The show will run until March 5 at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road.
